Dark and seductive, the 2013 Tempranillo has hints of mint, orange zest, plum and dusty wild berries that dominate the aroma. Surprisingly bright and fresh, this wine is lively and dances across the palate with flavors of black cherries, anise, dark chocolate and raspberry sorbet. Tempranillo has tannins that are ever evolving, creating a wine that will age exceptionally well for the next 6-10 years. Drink 2015 – 2025.
Overall the 2013 vintage was a grand slam and the best I’ve seen in 15 years. Temperatures were never too extreme and here in Amador we rarely saw days over 100F. As is typical we continued to experience the dramatic diurnal swings in the evenings where night time lows dipped into the upper 40Fs providing the perfect conditions for optimal acid development. Grapes ripened evenly and the colors, tannins, and overall flavor matrix across all varieties was stunning. Veraison occurred a few weeks early which allowed the grapes an exceptional amount of hang time allowing them to develop excellence in every facet. The resulting new wines are deep and concentrated and I am confident they will be enjoyed for years to come.
