Brooding aromas of black currant are laced with cranberry and mulberry that lead to flavors of lush, ripe berry fruits and hints of mineral and spice. The 2013 Syrah is rich and dense on the palate with a superbly layered structure that finishes with finely tuned firm tannins. Framed with a sense of vibrancy that is accompanied by subtle nuances of coffee and orange peel, the long elegant finish lingers on well after the last sip. Drink now through 2022.
Overall the 2013 vintage was a grand slam and the best I’ve seen in 15 years. Temperatures were never too extreme and here in Amador County, we rarely saw days over 100F. As is typical, we continued to experience the dramatic diurnal temperature swings in the evenings, where nighttime lows dipped into the upper 40F’s providing the perfect conditions for optimal acid development. Grapes ripened evenly and the colors, tannins, and overall flavor matrix across all varieties was stunning. Veraison occurred a few weeks early, which allowed the grapes an exceptional amount of hang time enabling them to develop excellence in every facet. The resulting wines from this vintage are deep and concentrated, and I am confident they will be enjoyed for years to come.
