![]() Winemaker’s Notes Our goal of late has been to add complexity through other varieties and we now have Petite Sirah to complement the Barbera, Mourvedrè and Alicante to make the complexity from blending even greater. Great color, luscious berry fruit flavors, scents from the French Oak aging and firm chalky tannins round out this sensational wine.
Vintage
The growing season of 2006 was about as average as a California year could possibly be. Normal levels of rainfall, not too hot or too cold, the usual hot summer and blessedly no rain at harvest. The fruit was harvested in perfect condition.
Vineyards
Grandpère® Zinfandel comes from the Grandpère® vineyard situated behind Renwood Winery in Plymouth, California. This 20 acres vineyard is home to the oldest clone of Zinfandel in America. Believed to be 130 years old, this unique clone produces one of the biggest, spiciest Zinfandels. This vineyard is planted on its own rootstock and is classically head pruned. Tight berry clusters, deep concentrated flavors, this vineyard produces award winning Zinfandels.
Fermentation and Aging
All lots from this vineyard were fermented separately. After fermentation and an extended maceration period, the fruit was gently pressed and aged for 19 months in combination of new, one-year-old and two-year-old French and European oak barrels. After the Assemblage in March of 2008 the wine was further aged in barrel until bottling in November of 2008. |
